French Mulberry Bug Spray Recipe

  • Author: Maria Benedetti
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: About 2 cups 1x

Description

This French Mulberry Bug Spray recipe is a natural, effective way to repel mosquitoes and pests. Made with French mulberry (American beautyberry) leaves and essential oils, it’s safe, eco-friendly, and smells refreshingly herbal—perfect for outdoor use without harsh chemicals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh French mulberry leaves (or 1 cup dried)
  • 2 cups distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon witch hazel (acts as a natural preservative)
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil (optional, calming scent)
  • 10 drops citronella or eucalyptus oil (for added protection)
  • 1 amber glass spray bottle (8 oz or more)

Instructions

  1. Rinse and Crush: Wash the mulberry leaves thoroughly. Crush them gently to help release their natural oils.
  2. Simmer: In a small pot, combine the leaves and water. Simmer on low heat for 10 minutes.
  3. Cool and Strain: Allow the mixture to cool for 10 minutes, then strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh sieve.
  4. Mix: Stir in the witch hazel and essential oils.
  5. Bottle: Pour the liquid into a sterilized amber spray bottle. Label with the date.
  6. Store: Keep in the refrigerator for maximum freshness. Use within two weeks.

Notes

  • Always perform a patch test before applying widely.
  • Want stronger spray? Let the leaves steep overnight.
  • Shake well before each use.
